Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives Simon Chelugui on May 16, 2024 chaired a consultative meeting with Council of Governors towards streamlining Co-operatives Bill.
He noted that Cooperatives drives the economy by stimulating growth from the bottom to the top.
According to the CS, as far as the cooperative sector is concerned, Kenya is ranked number one in the continent and number seven globally and the efforts of founding fathers cannot be gainsaid.
“Now, the onus is on us to ensure that we take this important sector to the next level in terms of management and administration to ensure that we don’t only cement our position globally but also ensure we keep up with the best in the world,” he stated.
The Cooperatives Bill is currently in Parliament.
The bill seeks to promote uniform norms and standards in the registration, regulation, supervision and management of cooperatives and establish a framework for consultation and co-operation amongst counties.
“Our intention, purpose and goal is to develop a smooth working relationship with the devolved units for the mutual benefit of our people,” added Chelugui.
In attendance were Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, who is also the chairman of the Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives in the COG, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Busia Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and Nyandarua Governor Moses Kiarie Badilisha.
The meeting was also graced by the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Cooperatives Patrick Kilemi and the Commissioner of Cooperatives David Obonyo among other officers from the Ministry.
