The County of Government of Nakuru has admitted about the faulty street lighting and the popular Mulika Mwizi which had been erected in trading centers within the County.
In an interview, Governor Lee Kinyanjui says the energy audit committee has discovered the county has been overspending in paying electricity bills.
“Energy audit committee has revealed that the county has been overspending in paying electricity bills due to the street lights” said Kinyanjui.
According to Kinyanjui, his administration has been spending between Ksh17millions to Ksh20 millions in settling the bills.
The faulty lights have in recent led to public outcry in various trading centers saying that they have been rendered fruitless in the business during the night.
The matter also arose at the county assembly during the impeachment of CECM Lucy Kariuki from Infrastructure docket.
Traders have been crying of robbers who have been taking advantage of the faulty lights to break into their business whereas fraudsters have been using the dark to use fake money to buy items.
However, Kinyanjui says his administration has embarked on replacing the energy consuming bulbs with energy saver to reduce the high cost.
According to the County boss, they are aiming at reducing the cost by 30% so as to use the remaining figure in carrying out other development activities.
