Alcoholic drinks, Cigarettes and loud music have been cited as major contributors of infections to the ear, nose and throat.
This is according to the Kenya Ear, Nose and Throat Society which is now advocating for change in habits of Kenyans in order to avert such infections.
Speaking in Nakuru during their 26th annual scientific conference, the Chair of the Society Mr.Samuel Nyagah said there was need for Kenyans to change their habits among them alcohol drinking, smoking and playing loud music.
“We are advocating for people to do the right things, to reduce amount of alcohol, to reduce smoking and to our youths they should stop listening to loud music because they can develop diseases that will affect them” he said.
Sentiments echoed by Scientific Committee secretary Dr.Wahome Karanja who revealed that there was need for more ENT Doctors to cater for the rising needs of patients suffering from ear, nose and throat diseases across the country.
According to Dr.Wahome, Kenya has only about 80 ENT surgeons working across the country but only close to a half of the number work in Nairobi hence there is need for more doctors to handle the rising cases of ENT cases.
“Our country has about 80 ENT surgeons working across the country but only close to a half of the number work in Nairobi.ENT diseases contribute to a huge population that needs services hence there is need for more ENT doctors” he said.
The conference was attended by delegates from neighboring countries as well as delegates from India, Clinical officers from all the counties as well as University students who are members of the ENT.
