Pyrethrum farmers in Nakuru county have a reason to smile following national government’s move to introduce a new credit facility.
This is aimed at empowering farmers to expand their cultivation of the crop.
It should be noted that Nakuru County has put in place efforts to increase the acreage of Pyrethrum production from the current 3000 acres to 30000 acres.
Government spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura, while visiting the Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya in Nakuru City on Tuesday May 21, revealed that this plan will further be enhanced by anticipated funding from the World Bank.
This is expected to raise pyrethrum cultivation from the current 8000 acres to 85,000 acres across 19 pyrethrum growing counties, cementing Kenya’s position in the global pyrethrum market.
Dr. Mwaura during an earlier engagement with pyrethrum farmers in Njoro Sub-County, acknowledged Nakuru County as the nation’s top pyrethrum producer, and promised farmers of substantial support from the national government in form of seedlings, dryers, and competitive prices for their flowers.
He further lauded measures that the Nakuru County government under the leadership of Governor Susan Kihika has taken to boost pyrethrum production in the County.
Kenya currently stands fourth in the global rankings, and aims to reclaim its former glory as the world’s leading producer of pyrethrum.
The Government spokesperson together with his team are on a 5-day community and media engagement tour, on national government initiated projects in the County.
