Hugh Cholmondeley, 3rd Baron Delamere was born on 28th April 1970 and came to Nakuru in 1901.
Delamere received a 99-year lease on 100,000 acres (400 km2) of land that would be named ‘Equator Ranch.’ In 1906, he acquired a 50,000 acres (210 km²) farm in Gilgil located between Elementeita and Mbaruk . This ranch he named Soysambu.
Delamere was the first European to start a maize farm, Florida Farm, in Rongai and established the first flour mill in Kenya (Unga limited) in 1908. He was also instrumental in founding the Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) in 1923/24.
Lord Delamere died in 1931 and is buried on a man-made hill in his Soysambu Ranch near Ndabibi Secondary school in Maiella, Naivasha.
