Governor Kihika highlights her efforts towards clean environment at Green Apple Awards 2025

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has reiterated the commitment that her administration has towards better clean environment.

Speaking when she joined the Green Organisation at the Green Apple Awards 2025 at the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster, Kihika emphasized environmental efforts, which are rooted in the belief that the environment is life itself.

Kihika who was among key speakers highlighted her administration’s commitment to protecting water, air, soils, and ecosystems, focusing on safeguarding natural systems rather than just infrastructure.

‘We’ve increased reliable water access from 59.2% and aim for 80% by 2030, with efforts like restoring the Mau Forest and promoting nature-positive enterprises to protect East Africa’s crucial water tower,” she stated.

Governor Kihika discussed her administration’s shift to clean energy, including solar, biogas, and energy-efficient fuels that reduce deforestation, lower costs, and improve health.

Through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action programme, Nakuru’s sub-counties are building climate resilience with projects in water, sanitation, wetland and biodiversity restoration, tree-planting, and urban green innovations, such as Sponge City.

“We’re also investing in the future with initiatives such as the Climate Change and Energy Innovation Hub, innovative energy solutions, and Kenya’s first county-level air quality network, all aimed at promoting the adoption of clean energy and climate tech,” she said.

According to Kihika, the progress benefits the people, including mothers who save on long water journeys.

In addition, Schools and hospitals are cleaner, and young innovators are developing climate-smart solutions.

She called for stronger partnerships in conservation, climate technology, and research because climate change requires global collaboration.

“I remain committed to protecting the earth and building resilience for future generations in Nakuru,” stated Kihika.
