14 police officers under investigation for violating curfew enforcement guidelines

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has said that at least 14 police officers are under active investigation for use of excessive force during the enforcement of the curfew law.

Speaking when he appeared before the Senate Security committee via video conferencing,Matiang’i said that the law will be applied and if found to have violated the law the officers will be punished.

The CS admitted to incidences of police officers applying excessive force and going beyond the instructions they had been given.

He said that the public has been very instrumental in helping his ministry get to know of cases where police officers have violated the law.

Matiang’i was however quick to defend the uniformed force saying that majority of police officers were executing their duties as per the law.

He said that just like any other sector within the public service, the police service also has  a few bad elements ruining its good name.

According to Matiang’i, he has instructed the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to document all reported cases of police violations for further investigations and action.

Since the start of the curfew enforcement Kenyans have decried the manner in which police officers have been carrying out their duties with several deaths and  deaths being blamed on the force.
